12-Step Facilitation

AKA: TSF

A professional, structured therapy that helps people engage with and benefit from 12-step programs.

In the context of addiction treatment:
TSF is used by clinicians to introduce the concepts of AA/NA, help overcome barriers, and support clients in trying meetings and working steps.

What to know:

  • Evidence-based; shown to increase meeting attendance and abstinence for some people.

  • Focuses on acceptance, surrender, and active involvement in a 12-step fellowship.

  • Think of it as a “bridge” between formal treatment and the peer-led 12-step world.

Example:
In IOP, a counselor uses TSF, helping a client pick a home group, find a sponsor, and understand the first three steps.
