Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Used to process traumatic experiences that often drive substance use.

What to know:

  • Should be done by specifically trained EMDR therapists.

  • Treatment often includes preparation and stabilization before directly processing trauma.

Example:
A person with trauma from a car crash uses EMDR to reduce the emotional intensity of those memories, which had been fueling opioid misuse.
