Fentanyl Test Strips

Small test strips that can detect the presence of fentanyl in a drug sample.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Used in harm reduction to help people who are still using reduce overdose risk.

What to know:

  • A positive result means fentanyl is present; a negative result doesn’t guarantee safety (test limits, other analogs).

  • Some regions treat strips as harm-reduction tools; others may have legal restrictions.

  • Many programs distribute fentanyl test strips along with naloxone.

Example:
Before using, a person tests a small amount of powder with a fentanyl test strip and finds it positive, so they use less, don’t use alone, and keep naloxone nearby.
