Motivational Interviewing

AKA: MI

A conversational style that helps people explore their own reasons for change rather than being told what to do.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Used a lot in early recovery, when someone is unsure if they’re “ready” or still sees some benefits in using.

What to know:

  • Non-judgmental, collaborative, and curious — not confrontational.

  • Built around open questions, reflections, and highlighting the person’s strengths and values.

Example:
Instead of saying “You have to quit,” a counselor asks, “What do you like about using? And what don’t you like?” and builds from there.
