Naltrexone

A medication that blocks opioid receptors. It can be used to treat opioid or alcohol use disorders to reduce cravings or prevent the “high.”

In the context of addiction treatment:
Comes in oral form and as a long-acting injection (Vivitrol®).

What to know:

  • People must be opioid-free for a period before starting naltrexone to avoid precipitated withdrawal.

  • For alcohol use disorder, naltrexone can help reduce heavy drinking days.
