Stabilization Unit

A short-term setting focused on immediate safety and stabilization.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Used when someone is in crisis—severe withdrawal, psychosis, suicidality—before transitioning to standard rehab.

What to know:

  • Often hospital-based or closely linked to medical services.

  • Length of stay is usually brief (days, not weeks).

Example:
A person with alcohol withdrawal seizures is admitted to a stabilization unit before going to residential treatment.
