Step-Down Care

Moving to a less intensive level of care after improvement.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Examples: residential → PHP → IOP → standard outpatient.

What to know:

  • Step-down is a sign of progress, not “being kicked out.”

  • Helps people gradually transition back into everyday life.

Example:
After 30 days residential, a client steps down to IOP while starting part-time work.
