Tolerance

When a person needs more of a substance over time to feel the same effects, or the same amount produces less effect.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Tolerance is one sign of a developing substance use disorder.

What to know:

  • Tolerance can make people underestimate their risk, especially with opioids and alcohol.

  • Loss of tolerance (after a break or jail/prison) is a major overdose risk factor.
