Triggers

Internal or external things that increase the urge to use, such as certain people, places, emotions, songs, or even smells.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Identifying triggers is a key step in relapse prevention work.

What to know:

  • Triggers can be obvious (your old bar) or subtle (celebrations, stress, loneliness).

  • Over time you can learn to anticipate and manage triggers instead of being ruled by them.
