White-Knuckling

Trying to stay sober using willpower alone, without support, tools, or lifestyle changes.

In the context of addiction treatment:
Often leads to high anxiety, rigid thinking, and burnout, making relapse more likely.

What to know:

  • If you’re “white-knuckling,” you’re technically sober but miserable—and that’s not sustainable.

  • Building recovery tools (support groups, therapy, coping skills, routines) helps move beyond this phase.

  • It’s okay to ask for more help rather than trying to tough it out alone.

Example:
Someone stops drinking but refuses meetings, therapy, or social changes; after weeks of tension and irritability, they snap and binge.
